Veto override
Also known as: override
Definition
Both chambers must re-pass the bill, usually by 2/3 supermajority, to enact it over the governor's veto.
Why it matters
An override is the legislature's last word, and the hardest vote in politics. Re-passing a vetoed bill usually takes a two-thirds supermajority in both chambers, which means members of the governor's own party must vote against their governor, in public, on the record. That's why most overrides fail by a handful of votes: the math is brutal and the loyalty pressure is worse.
In the game
If the governor vetoes your bill, The Bill to Law Game's override mini-game has you hunting the last few votes one legislator at a time, with everything you've built on the line.
